Skeeters Sign Former Major League RHP Matt West

SUGAR LAND, TX— The Skeeters announced today the signing of former Major League right-hander Matt West and activated him prior to Thursday’s game against Southern Maryland.
West, 29, last appeared with the Orix Buffaloes of the Japan Pacific League in 2017, making two relief appearances and recording a 4.50 ERA without a decision. He last appeared at the affiliated level in 2016 with Triple-A Oklahoma City (Los Angeles Dodgers) and spent Spring Training in 2018 with the Detroit Tigers before being released by the organization in March.
The Houston, Texas native was selected by the Texas Rangers in the second round of the 2007 MLB Draft out of Bellaire High School (Bellaire, Texas).  West made his Major League debut with the Rangers in 2014 and appeared with the Dodgers in 2015. In five career Major League appearances — all coming in relief — West is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA (7 IP) and has five strikeouts to two walks while allowing eight hits.
West has appeared at the Minor League level with the Toronto Blue Jays, along with the Dodgers and Rangers. He spent the first three seasons of his professional career as an infielder before being converted to a relief pitcher in 2011. He’s 11-11 with a 3.54 ERA through 156 career Minor League appearances (203 2/3 IP), including three starts. He also owns a career slash line of .239/.343/.363 with 22 home runs and 150 RBIs through 1,211 Minor League at-bats, primarily playing third base.
