Minnesota Twins Purchase Contract of RHP Austin Adams, Skeeters Re-Sign LHP Derrick Loop

SUGAR LAND, TX— The Sugar Land Skeeters today announced that right-hander Austin Adams had his contract purchased by the Minnesota Twins, who assigned him to Double-A Chattanooga. The Skeeters also announced that they’ve re-signed left-hander Derrick Loop, who was a member of the Skeeters’ run to the 2016 Atlantic League title.

Adams, 32, becomes the 12th player from the 2018 Skeeters to have his contract purchased by a Major League Baseball organization and the 14th player to have his contract purchased by a professional baseball organization, both leading the Atlantic League. The 12 contracts purchased from Major League Baseball organizations add to the franchise’s single-season record, surpassing the previous record of nine set in 2013. Since the Skeeters joined the Atlantic League in 2012, the most contracts purchased by Major League Baseball organizations in a single season was 13 from the Somerset Patriots in 2017.

Adams, who signed with the Skeeters on June 1, went 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA and a save through 30 appearances with Sugar Land this season, spanning 28 1/3 innings pitched. Adams is a veteran of three Major League seasons, having appeared with the Cleveland Indians from 2014-16. He’s 2-0 with a 6.29 ERA in 53 appearances at the Major League level. He last appeared at the affiliated level in 2017 with Triple-A Salt Lake (Los Angeles Angels) and owns a 3.33 ERA through 209 career appearances at the Minor League level. Adams was selected as an Eastern League All-Star in 2011 while with Double-A Akron and was ranked as the Indians’ No. 10 prospect prior to the 2014 season, per Baseball America. The Indians selected Adams in the fifth round of the 2009 MLB Draft out of Faulkner University (Faulkner, Ala.).

Loop, 34, has spent the 2018 season thus far with Oaxaca and Quintana Roo of the Mexican League, going a combined 1-2 with a 2.41 ERA and three saves through 31 appearances. Loop appeared with the Skeeters in 2015 and '16, setting the team's single-season saves record with 32 in 2016, not including four saves in the 2016 postseason as the Skeeters went on to win the Atlantic League title. He's gone a combined 4-3 with a 1.66 ERA in 47 career appearances with the Skeeters. His 47 saves also stand as the Skeeters’ all-time record. The Cleveland Indians selected Loop in the 23rd round of the 2006 MLB Draft out of California State University, Los Angeles, and he’s gone 62-40 with a 3.10 ERA, spanning 906 innings pitched in 555 career appearances at the professional level.
