SUGAR LAND, TX— The Atlantic League announced today that Sugar Land Skeeters outfielder Courtney Hawkins will be one of six participants in the Digmi Home Run Derby on Wednesday, July 11, taking place prior to the Atlantic League All-Star Game at Bethpage Ballpark in Long Island, presented by Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center.
Hawkins, who is in his first season with the Skeeters, is second in the Atlantic League with 13 home runs and is third in the league with a .491 slugging percentage. Hawkins, 24, hit the first inside-the-park home run in Constellation Field history and the second in Skeeters history on the team’s Opening Day contest against the New Britain Bees on April 27. He also contributed a walk-off home run – the Skeeters’ only of the season – on May 30 at Constellation Field against Long Island. The former No. 13 overall pick of the 2012 MLB Draft will be joined by Lancaster Barnstormers outfielder Blake Gailen, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs outfielder Cory Vaughn, Long Island outfielders David Washington and Lew Ford and New Britain Bees infielder Deibinson Romero in the Home Run Derby.
Contestants in the Digmi Home Run Derby will receive six outs in the first round, with any ball in play not resulting in a home run ruled an out, and the top three home run totals will advance to the second round. Contestants will receiver four outs in the final round, and in the result of a tie, the players locked in the tie will get an additional two outs to determine the champion.
Along with Hawkins, four other Skeeters will take part in the 21st Annual Atlantic League All-Star Game. Hawkins will be joined by infielder Matt Chavez, catcher/infielder Albert Cordero, right-hander Felipe Paulino and right-hander Konner Wade. Right-hander Dallas Beeler was also selected to the All-Star game before having his contract purchased by the Kansas City Royals.
