Chicago Cubs Purchase Contract of RHP Casey Coleman

SUGAR LAND, TX— The Skeeters announced today that the contract of right-hander Casey Coleman was purchased by the Chicago Cubs, who are expected to assign him to Triple-A Iowa.

Coleman is the ninth player this season to have his Skeeters contract purchased by a professional baseball organization and is the eighth to have his contract purchased by a Major League Baseball organization. The Skeeters lead the Atlantic League with their 10 contracts purchased. They are also one contract away from matching their single-season record of contracts purchased by Major League organizations, which they set in 2013. Since the Skeeters joined the Atlantic League in 2012, the most single-season contract purchases from Major League organizations was 13 from the Somerset Patriots in 2017.

Coleman, 31, signed with the Skeeters on May 26 and went 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA through seven outings (six starts). The former Major Leaguer last appeared at the affiliated level in 2017 with Triple-A Fresno (Houston Astros) before joining the Skeeters. He last appeared at the Major League level in 2014 Kansas City Royals and also appeared at the Major League level with the Cubs (2010-12). In 58 career Major League outings (26 starts), Coleman is 8-13 with a 5.72 ERA over 177 2/3 innings pitched.

Along with the Astros, Cubs and Royals, Coleman has appeared at the affiliated level with the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners organizations. Coleman is 57-36 with a 3.89 ERA across 246 MiLB appearances (102 starts).  Coleman is a member of one of five families in baseball history to have three generations of players reach the Major Leagues. His father, Joseph Howard Coleman, and grandfather, Joseph Patrick Coleman, were each former American League All-Stars in Major League careers that spanned a combined 25 seasons. The other families with three generations of Major League players are the Bells, Boones, Hairstons and Schofields/Werths.
